Child

He wandered through the streets without apparent purpose, an early-even reveler or a person with nothing urgent on his mind or demanding his attention. He seemed at his ease, occasionally stopping to take a closer look at a window display or to admire a particularly well-executed piece of architectural detail. He was dressed well, his clothes were expensive-looking and obviously custom tailored though not ostentatious, and he moved with an air of relaxed athleticism. “Well, what do you think?” Far above the wanderer’s vantage, two figures could be poorly made out amongst the shadows of the rooftop overhead, walking and conversing as they followed the wanderer’s progress in the street below. “An interesting fellow. He has a fair amount of potential I’d say.” Said the one on the left, responding to the question from the figure on the right. “And your assessment?” He asked the figure on the right. “Definitely. He’s right in the middle, no strong dedication to one moral code or the other. Well to do, but with a sense of himself and enough drive to train his body when he could be at his ease. Indolent enough to while away an evening in pursuit of no particular purpose, but making use of his time in a fashion, nonetheless.” the figure on the right stated with some degree of certainty. The figure on the left cocked his head slightly as he watched the wanderer, “Agreed.” he stated. “Shall we place him in circumstances that will take away his fence-sitting manner? Alter the conditions of his life to force him to choose?” The figure on the left asked, mild excitement in his tone. “I suppose so.” said the figure on the right, pausing slightly before he said, “He’ll need to decide sooner or later and it might as well be now while he’ll still be of use.” The figure on the left chuckled in a thoughtful way. “Well, young child of man, let’s see whose child you will be. Which you will choose as your parent…” he said, trailing off with the implications of his words still humming in the air, while, below, the wanderer continued on his way unaware of the interest his evening’s jaunt had engendered.
